Preparing for a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition isn’t just about training on the mats — it’s about being organized and ready when the big day comes. That’s why we’ve created the Dark Bear Jiu Jitsu Match Day Checklist. From essential gear and snacks to mindset tools and warm-up reminders, this checklist ensures nothing important is forgotten. Packing the night before reduces stress and helps you walk into the venue focused, confident, and ready to perform at your best. Also be sure to check out our tournament preparation guide here!
• 1 clean, competition-legal gi or rash guard/shorts for no-gi (Some tournaments only allow specific gi colors or ranked rash guards - be sure to check your gear is legal)
• 1 backup gi or no-gi set (Ideally it will be a different color gi or a second allowed rash guard )
• Belt(s) in correct rank color
• Flip-flops or sandals for walking off mats
• Mouthguard (optional, but recommended)
• 1–2 liters of water or electrolyte drink (I recommend Liquid IV)
• Light snacks (bananas, rice cakes, energy bars, nut butter packs)
• Pre-weigh-in snack if needed (e.g., small piece of fruit)
• Athletic tape
• Small first-aid kit (band-aids, disinfectant wipes)
• Skin wipes for hygiene
• Any personal medications
• Printed or digital registration confirmation
• ID (some events require it)
• Read the event rules the night before
• Pack a small towel
• Phone charger or power bank
• Pen & notepad (for post-match notes)
• Headphones & playlist for focus (It shouldn't be a brand new playlist, just the music you always listen to)
• Pre-match warm-up routine written down
• 1–2 key techniques you’ll use as your go-to plan
• Positive reminder note (e.g., “Stay calm, work the plan”)
